A South Texas Holiday Tradition

The Crockett Hotel wants to introduce you to a South Texas holiday tradition: hot tamales! Most people know that tamale-making is a ritual of Mexican cuisine. But those outside of Texas probably don't know that this traditional food is usually eaten during holidays: the Day of the Dead, Las Posadas, Mexican Independence, and yes, even on Christmas! Making tamales is a complex and time-consuming process and therefore requires dozens of hands. Because tamales are made in batches -- sometimes as large as 100, it's a truly communal event. On December 10th, you can participate in this community custom in a workshop hosted by La Gran Tamalada at the historic Guadalupe Theater. The San Antonio Current says this workshop "blends storytelling, the history of the tamalada (tamale-making party) and promotes cultural pride and lifelong learning." The event is free and open to participants of all ages.
